Safe Haven in China: The Untold History of the Jews (www.safehaveninchina.org) is the remarkable story of refugees traversing ancient China to beg protection from an emperor; it is the story of modern-day Jews fleeing persecution by Russian imperialist Pogroms and a German fascist, named Hitler. The program will encompass over 1,000 years of migration to China by groups of Jews from many different countries, and explores the Jewish communities within China that bustled with schools, synagogues, clubs, theaters, newspapers and businesses.

The program will also document one of the few positive stories coming out of the nightmare that was the Jewish Holocaust: How the diverse Jewish community and the Chinese in Shanghai came together to save the lives of approximately 30,000 refugees during World War II. Safe Haven in China will tell their stories and preserve this very important chapter in world history. Capturing these stories, memories and reflections is particularly urgent right now. Every year more individuals in the small and rapidly aging group of people who can speak from personal experience pass away.

Integral to this fascinating history is the amicable relationship between the Jewish immigrants and the local Chinese. It is a relationship of tolerance, respect and peaceful living that can serve as an inspiring example to the world.

This documentary will offer fascinating interviews with the Jewish and Chinese people who lived through this history, as well as with academic experts and historians. Original music will punctuate visuals rich with location footage of China, as well as historical films, photographs and memorabilia. The content will be presented chronologically.
